On January 13, 1963, God sent a blessing to Lowell and Beatrice Phillips. Verlinda arrived as a glorious 2-pound preemie baby. She began this life as a fighter and survivor.
Verlinda attended John G. Osborne and Benbrook Elementary Schools. She also attended M.C. Williams and S.P. Waltrip High Schools, graduating in 1981. She went on to obtain degrees from Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University, in the fields of Physical Education and Counseling.
Verlinda became acquainted with Christ at an early age. She joined Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was baptized under the leadership of Reverend S.B. Parker, Sr. She played the piano and served as Musician for the Children’s Choir. As a member of the Greater Zion Music Ministry, she sang in the Youth Adult Choir and was a faithful member of The Heavenly Host Choir at the time of her passing.
Verlinda was an educator in the Aldine School District for 28 years. She loved and adored working with children. She spent a significant part of her career teaching at Conley Elementary. Her latest assignment was at Francis Elementary. She also spent summers working with the children at the YMCA.
Verlinda was loved by many and her presence will be greatly missed. She positively impacted many lives during her journey here on Earth.
She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister. She remains in the hearts of a host of cousins, other relatives, co-workers and friends.
