Shirley Johnson was born on May 28, 1940, to Etta Washington Johnson and Freddie Lee Johnson. She was the oldest of eight children.
At an early age, Shirley professed her faith in Christ at Wesley Chapel A.M.E Methodist Church, under the leadership of Reverend W.D. Williams and Reverend E.E. Coates on Emancipation Avenue in Houston’s historic Third Ward.
Shirley was a proud graduate of Jack Yates Senior High School, Class of 1959. She continued her education at Texas Southern University, graduate of the Class of 1962, earning a degree in Elementary Education. That same year, on May 5, she married Leroy Parker. Their union lasted 36 years until his passing in 1998.
A dedicated educator, Shirley served the Houston Independent School District for 35 years in elementary education. She positively shaped the lives of countless students, until her retirement.
On June 28, 2025, at the age of 85, her earthly journey ended and her eternal one began. God called Shirley home at 3:30 pm.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Parker; her parents: Freddie Lee Johnson, Sr. and Etta Washington Johnson; two sisters: Elouise Brooks and Sarah Johnson; and one brother, Freddie Lee Johnson, Jr.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her two children; Kevin Parker (Claudette) and Bridget Parker; five grandchildren: Brittany Wilson (Carl); Bria Bryant, Kevin Parker, Jr., Destiny Renfro, and Mariah Parker; four siblings: Emmet Johnson (Susan), Ralph Johnson (Nett), Benjamin Johnson, Marie Alcendor (Joseph) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Her life was a testament of faith, family, and service. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
