Cornel Rylander Obituary

Cornel Rylander was born on April 21, 1949 to Barbara Watson Rylander and Jesse Lee Rylander, Sr. in Houston, Texas.

Cornel was a faithful servant and was reared in the fear of God. He was baptized at an early age and has since used his God-given talents to bless others through singing in the choir and working in the ministries at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Richard Jewel Rose.

Cornel matriculated through the Houston Independent School District where he graduated from Jack Yates Senior High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was a proud veteran.

In the spring of 1971, he returned to Houston from the military where he met the love of his life, Gloria Yvonne Perkins. They were wed on October 31, 1971 and to this union two children were two children were born: a daughter, Heleva and a son, Jamal. After Gloria’s passing in December 2010, he met his partner, Dorothy Phillips. They were wed in October 2014.

Cornel held several positions throughout his life such as a Printer, a CDL Operator and Forklift Operator. He retired from Crane International in 2018. He was introduced to bowling in the early 1970’s and his love for the sport continued throughout his life.

On the morning of Sunday, March 17, 2024, our Father in Heaven saw that Cornel's hills were getting harder for him to climb. Therefore, He whispered for him to come and rest upon His whisper...on that Sunday morning, Cornel fell asleep in the Arms of Jesus. Cornel was preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria parents: Barbara and Jesse and his sisters: Gretchen and Denise.

To Left to cherish his memory are his steadfast wife, Dorothy Rylander; daughter, Heleva Rylander Bacchus: son, Jamal Rylander (Marilyn); grandchildren: Kiauna, Ebony, Jaedon, Joseph,  Mason, Imani, Madison; great-grandsons: Leon and Scorpio Jr.; sisters: Brenda Williams (Mark) and Malika Sabah; brothers: Ronald Rylander (Bobbie) and Jesse Lee Rylander, Jr. (Beatrice); 17 nieces and nephews, 43 great-nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
